Well not a self-identified feminist, Rita Angus as a person and in her portraits no doubt resonate with feminists of the time and today, in her activism for female artists and her unequivocally confident self portraits. Rita Angus’s portraits reflect a developing self through forty years. Essays in the understanding of the self, they are also meditation and technical exploration, She was known for the variety of guises in her self-portraits – strong and confident in one; introspective in another; direct and piercing; sometimes playful as she confronts the viewer.
